Why leftwingers should support a Flat Tax

David Walker is wrong to argue in the Guardian today that the Flat Tax is a rightwing idea to help the better off. If this were the case, why is a Flat Tax being considered by the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in Spain, why is it being implemented the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) in Poland and why was it proposed by Jerry Brown in the 1992 Democratic primaries in the US? A Flat Tax would help the poorest members of our society by relieving them of their tax burden and generating the economic conditions for greater prosperity. For this reason, politicians on both the left and the right should support it.
